Meet Henrih! A Turn-About Ranch Graduate
At Turn-About Ranch, we have one goal: To help develop our students into effective individuals and positively impact their lives and the lives of their families. Over the years, we have helped hundreds of teens and their families, instilling powerful change in their lives. Below, you’ll hear more about Henrih’s story and how Turn-About Ranch helped him.
Henrih’s Story: A Turn-About Ranch Graduate
How Was Your Level 1 Impact Experience?
“It definitely helped me a lot, I had a lot of time to think. When I thought about why I was there, I just kind of got a mental list in my head of what I had to work on to get out of the program.”
Typically, when a teen first arrives at Turn-About Ranch, it doesn’t take long for them to understand why they’re here. The first place students are sent after arrival is Camp Roundy. This is where they’ll stay at first, giving them plenty of space and time to think. This is where we see students start to self-reflect. We believe this is a step in the right direction and once students accept why they are at the ranch with us, then we can start to help them better themselves.
How Safe Did You Feel at Turn-About Ranch
“I felt very safe. I felt like the staff really cared about how students felt.”
The safety of our students is of the utmost importance to us. We strictly adhere to a set of safety guidelines to ensure that every student who comes to our facility is safe and taken care of. In addition, you can feel confident all of our staff and programs are appropriately licensed or regulated by state or local agencies and adhere to established standards of care.
We understand that the decision to send your child away can be one of the most difficult decisions a parent can make. We understand your feelings of worry and uncertainty about the future. Our highly qualified program staff have been trained on how to help you through this difficult time. We hope to be of assistance and support to you throughout the therapeutic process.
What Role Did Consequences Play in Your Program?
“It was more like a reminder for me of what I should do and what I shouldn’t do. When I got a good consequence, I knew that was something I should have done and I felt good about myself. When I had a negative consequence, it gave me a base on what I should improve on.”
Through their work on the ranch, students reap many benefits from successfully completing tasks in the appropriate manner and handling the consequences of their actions. We start to see real change in teens once they understand that there can be both good and bad consequences. We want our students to understand how their actions affect their loved ones and once they do, that’s when we start to see an overall change start to occur.
“If I didn’t have any consequences, I wouldn’t know if I was doing the right thing or the wrong thing.”
How Did The Horsemanship Program Add to Your Success?
“It taught me that things are going to be difficult and even if they seem impossible if I just keep pressing on it and insisting on trying to do it, I’m going to be able to do it.”
The overall goal of our horsemanship program is to help students learn the value of patience, focus, connections, and commitment. They’ll learn more about relationships through their partnership with their horse. Here, it is our hope that students will start to learn how actions can affect those around them. Our program goes beyond equine therapy and uses practical application to teach students critical life skills that can help them be successful in the future.
How Do You Feel Turn-ABout Ranch Helped Your Family Heal?
“Now I feel like we are a family that works with each other.”
Therapy plays a critical role when it comes to helping our students. Not only do we do individual therapy sessions but we also do family therapy sessions. Research shows one of the biggest predictors of a teen’s success after completing a program is the extent to which their families are involved in the treatment process before discharge. When families are involved in their teen’s process, we often see better results.
How Did TAR Help You Decide to Work on a Ranch?
“Turn-About Ranch helped me realize that I like working. When I’m working I don’t let myself think of the unnecessary things that I used to think of.”
During their time at Turn-About Ranch, students will work hard participating in projects with real value and benefit both themselves and their community. Students will develop a strong work ethic that applies to their everyday life. When a project is completed, our students can step back and realize how their contribution to the ranch has positively impacted the community as a whole.
